Ingredient spotlight: Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is all the rage on the skin care scene and with good reason. We often have this wonder ingredient to thank for the sought-after dewy and hydrated look that’s on everyone’s wish list. Here is why you should add this wonder hydrator to your daily regimen!
All we want is glowy, hydrated skin and hyaluronic acid is a trusty skin care ingredient that always delivers. In the skin care world, it’s renowned for its amazing hydrating properties but what is it and what makes it so amazing?
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic doesn’t just come in fancy serum bottles, the body actually produces hyaluronic acid on its own as part of our skin and connective tissue. It’s the key molecule involved in skin moisture and is part of the skin’s Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF). The NMF is a range of naturally occurring substances in the skin’s top layer that help keep it protected, moisturised and supple.
What does hyaluronic acid do for the skin?
• It’s a moisture magnet that attracts and binds moisture
• Deeply hydrates, cushions and protects the skin
• Supports and strengthens the skin barrier
• Softens and smoothens rough or dry skin
• Encourages skin flexibility and skin radiance
• Plumps and smooths fine lines
How does hyaluronic acid work?
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture and it can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water - so it’s ah-mazing for keeping the skin hydrated! It infuses the skin’s top layer with luscious moisture, as well as softens and smooths uneven skin to make your skin look wonderfully silky and radiant. So, if your skin feels dry, rough or dull, hyaluronic acid should be your hydrator of choice.
Hyaluronic acid is also part of the NMF in the skin’s top layer which are needed for the protective skin barrier work effectively. It actually helps to strengthen the skin barrier and helps to prevent moisture from seeping out! It also gifts the skin with amazing properties like making it strong, flexible, elastic and resilient.
We’re convinced that hyaluronic acid should be a part of everyone’s routine, and not only if you’re after the glow and hydration. It’s suitable for all skin types, but especially for those with dry skin. As we get older, our skin is more susceptible to dryness because the natural skin elements needed to stop moisture loss start to go down, making it more prone to wrinkles. So, if you’ve started getting a few lines and wrinkles, you may want to know that it smooths the appearance of wrinkles and lines and has an instant plumping-effect on the skin.
What’s the difference between hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate?
They are both very effective moisturisers, but the difference is that hyaluronic acid is the pure form that is naturally found in the body and sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid. Pure Hyaluronic Acid is a large molecule that isn’t as well absorbed into the skin as sodium hyaluronate, yet still hydrates and refreshes the skin’s surface. Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid can more easily penetrate the skin.
Where can I find hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is often found in serums and creams, but you will get the best results if hyaluronic acid is used as part of a skin care routine where every product works to optimise hydration, radiance and smoothness.
